Internal Family Systems (IFS) & Parts Work
A compassionate approach to gently exploring your inner world, and healing the different parts of you.
What if there were nothing wrong with you?
What if every response your mind and body have developed is there for a reason… and probably a really good one?
Internal Family Systems (IFS) understands our inner world in terms of parts—some that work together, and some that seem to work completely against one another. “Parts” are simply different aspects of who we are that can hold different feelings, beliefs, needs, and ways of responding.
Think of it like this...
Have you ever felt a part of you wanting to go out while another part wants to stay home? Or maybe something deeper…. a part of you truly believes you're capable, while another is terrified you'll fail?
As human beings with complex lives, we experience inner conflicts like these all the time. You might have a critical part that says you're not good enough, a minimizing part that insists it wasn't that big of a deal, or an anxious part that warns don't say that—people will judge you.
And underneath all of those parts is… you.
At the center of all of this….sometimes buried pretty stinkin deep… is what IFS calls the Self: the grounded, compassionate, curious essence of who you are.
And I know you might immediately think, “I have no idea who I am,” or “I feel completely disconnected from myself.” And that's okay! IFS holds that Self is still there, even when it has become difficult to access beneath years of protection, pain, and survival.
Your system learned to protect you.
When we've experienced trauma, relational wounds, or environments where our needs and emotions weren't always safe or welcomed, our parts can become more disconnected and more in conflict with one another.
Our nervous system finds ways to protect us. Maybe you learned to stay small, stay busy, anticipate everyone else's needs, disconnect, or criticize yourself before others could.
These aren't signs that you’re broken. They're adaptations.
IFS gives us a framework for lovingly working with these protective responses rather than fighting against them. Together, we can begin to understand why they're there, what they're protecting, and what they might need to recognize that things are different now.
Rather than trying to silence, reframe, or push away what's happening inside, IFS invites us to listen inward with curiosity, compassion, and at a pace your nervous system can tolerate.
Over time, we can help old protective patterns soften, release beliefs and burdens that belong to the past, and create more connection within your mind and your body.
