Attachment Trauma & Relational Wounding
When connection hasn't always felt safe.
Trauma Therapy in Syracuse, NY
We learn what closeness, safety, love, and relationships feel like through our earliest relationships. Relational wounds can develop when those relationships are inconsistent, emotionally unavailable, frightening, rejecting, or require us to adapt ourselves in some way to maintain connection.
Why does attachment matter?
Our attachment system develops through our earliest experiences of connection. We learn what happens when we need comfort, when we’re upset, when we reach for someone, or when something feels too big to handle alone.
Over time, those experiences shape what we come to expect from relationships AND what we learn to do to protect ourselves within them. This becomes our inner working model for relationships. This defines in our bodies what feels safe or threatening, what we expect from others, and what kinds of relationships feel familiar or compelling to us.
And often, all of this is happening entirely outside of our conscious awareness.
This matters because these early patterns follow us into adulthood and can define our relationships, often without us even realizing it. Who we feel drawn to, what we tolerate from others, and how we respond to closeness and conflict all stems from this early wiring. Understanding our attachment patterns can help us make sense of why we keep finding ourselves in the same painful dynamics, and begin to create something different.
Some ways attachment wounds can show up now…
✧ Finding yourself repeatedly drawn to people who are emotionally unavailable or inconsistent
✧ People pleasing, feeling responsible for other’s feelings, struggling to say no… even though you want to!
✧ Feeling shame or discomfort around having needs or being vulnerable
✧ Tolerating hurtful behavior because setting a boundary or leaving feels harder than staying
✧ Feeling an urgency to repair disconnection or experiencing conflict as a threat to the relationship
✧ Editing your feelings, needs, or boundaries to preserve connection
How trauma therapy can help
Attachment patterns are not just thoughts or beliefs… they’re deeply learned ways your system has adapted to keep you safe in relationships.
Therapy gives us space to slow these patterns down and get curious about what’s underneath them. Through relational attunement, parts work, somatic awareness, nervous system regulation, and processing the experiences underneath these patterns, we’ll deepen your understanding of how you learned to navigate relationships.
Over time, therapy can help you to:
✧ Recognize patterns while they are happening (necessary in order to do something different!)
✧ Understand what gets activated underneath the patterns
✧ Feel safer having needs, boundaries, and emotions in your relationships
✧ Stay connected to yourself without losing connection to others
✧ Experience closeness without abandoning yourself
